About Us

      What's in a Name?

There’s something reassuring and compelling about a company whose name honestly tells you what it does.

Ours is a Canadian company with a long history of doing just that. We began as Paper Sales Limited in 1917, in Toronto at 53 Yonge Street. Then, much as today, we carried specialty paper products such as gold and silver paper and chocolate layer board.

John Hewitt, our founder, was a salesman for Price Bros. in the New England area. On leaving Price Bros., Hewitt entered into a supplier agreement with his previous employer that continued until 1960.

This type of long and mutually beneficial supplier relationship is one of the things we’re noted for. We have worked extensively with suppliers such as Eastman, sometimes as sole supplier of their new products. In fact, in 1961 we purchased a Dusenbury slitter just to slit and rewind thin gauge Kodacel and other Specialty papers.

By 1921, Paper Sales Ltd. had become so successful that an office was opened in Montreal and continues today, serving our customers in our important eastern Canadian market.

Over the years, the lines of products we’ve carried and services we’ve provided have changed to reflect the needs and uses of the times. By 1971, the growth of plastics had become so pervasive that we changed our name and adapted our product line to reflect this. Thus our name … PLASTIC & PAPER SALES INC.

Our longevity is based on our reputation for identifying trends, listening to our customers and the marketplace, and then working with our suppliers to provide our customers with the products they need. In other words, proactively serving our customers.

We will continue to adapt to the changing needs of the market, secure in the knowledge that this enables us to maintain our competitive edge. And, who knows what that may mean for the name of our company in future years!
